Azurite

Chemistry: Cu3(CO3)2(OH)2
Size: 120 mm
Owner: Harvard University (Karabacek Collection)
Photographer: Malcolm Southwood

Bladed crystals of of lustrous blue-black azurite (to 50 mm) on an oxidised crust over massive sulphide. The crust includes malachite and possibly smithsonite (?), but the yellowish-rust coloured material appears to be a crust of finely crystallised tsumcorite (?), although this has not been confirmed by analysis (see Photograph 2; FOV = 50 mm).

The specimen is # 1814 in the Karabacek Collection (MGMH # 93546), which dates it to the first oxidation zone.
