Azurite

Chemistry: Cu3(CO3)2(OH)2
Size: 100 mm
Owner: Harvard University (Karabacek Collection)
Photographer: Malcolm Southwood

A sharp 60 mm terminated prism of striated, blue-black azurite on a gossanous matrix, many surfaces of which are encrusted with tiny sheaves of reddish-brown smithsonite.  A 20 mm patch of malachite alteration is present on the azurite, but the remainder of the crystal is pristine and highly lustrous.

The specimen is # 1823 in the Karabacek Collection (MGMH # 93543), which dates it to the first oxidation zone.
