Azurite, (w. Malachite)

Mineral: Azurite, Malachite
Chemistry: Cu3(CO3)2(OH)2
Size: 62 mm
Owner: W.W. (Bill) Pinch
Photographer: Jeff Scovil

A group of slender, striated, prismatic azurite crystals (to 52 mm), on a yellowish, iron oxide-stained matrix.  The azurite is pristine, with no sign of alteration to malachite; however, separate aggregates of non-pseudomorphous malachite crystals on the matrix provide a striking colour contrast .

This specimen is from the collection of F.W.Kegel, general manager at Tsumeb between 1922 and 1932, and is believed to have been collected from the surface outcrop, or "Green Hill".
