Baydonite, (after Mimetite)

Size: 52 mm
Owner: Mariusz Oleszczuk
Photographer: Mariusz Oleszczuk

Columnar aggregates of elongated, hexagonal, prismatic mimetite crystals have been extensively replaced by mint-green bayldonite (XRD verified). The replacement, however, is incomplete, as evidenced by the cores of colourless-grey mimetite seen at the broken ends of some of the larger crystals.

The porous, slightly yellowish-green material visible at the top of the photograph and at the extreme right, is a mixture consisting largely of gartrellite, with a little bayldonite (both XRD verified).

The specimen is from the first oxidation zone.
