Calcite, (w. Duftite)

Mineral: Calcite, Duftite
Chemistry: CaCO3
Size: 110 mm
Owner: The Tsumeb Museum, Tsumeb, Namibia
Photographer: Malcolm Southwood

Colourless-white calcite crystals (to 30 mm), containing orientated inclusions of duftite, forming “Mercedes triangle” shaped phantoms in the calcite.

The duftite precipitated selectively over vertices in early-formed calcite, outlining the trigonal symmetry of the calcite.  Crystallisation of calcite resumed, overgrowing the early duftite-capped crystals with later formed calcite of rhombic habit,

FOV for close-up photograph is 90 mm.
