Dolomite, (after Calcite)

Mineral: Calcite, Dolomite
Size: 82 mm.
Owner: Geoff Krasnov
Photographer: Geoff Krasnov

A large crystal of calcite calcite, extensively replaced by pale pink, sugary-textured dolomite, but clearly retaining the trigonal symmetry of the original calcite.

The colour of the dolomite is possibly due to trace amounts of cobalt, although this has not been verified by analysis.

The bottom of the specimen reveals that only the core of the crystal retains the original calcite colour and composition.
